Freedom of Press! A pillar to democracy or mear mirage?

Freedom of Press

Freedom of Press:

A pillar to democracy or mear Mirage?

It's been more than 45 years since 1975 when our Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed ' the emergency.'

Well, that's when my father was still a teenager. Yet from his point of view, the stories about the emergency are so fascinating.

One of the trending tweets on Twitter during June are the statements, flashes, and stories that political leaders, ex-editors, and editors of several media houses, business owners, and even the common man are about the emergency.

Mostly the tweets are about how bars were held over the freedom of the press.

I hope all agree if I quote Press as the fourth pillar of a strong democratic and civilized society. Even the true identity of the press is to express unbiased and factual information in the interest of public welfare.

But is the freedom of the press strongly implemented or it's merely a mirage!

Is it free to act or a puppet of varied influences?

During the emergency, the media and press were gagged, and it was visible but in the era of digital press media, the gag is invisible and strongly holding its claws closed.

We as social animals are very much influenced by the press and media. Thus the press requires to be unbiased. Yet we find that most of the publication and media houses have various businesses as it's major investors. The influence is sure to be pushed on media houses by these business entities.

Looking at some facts we will find that in the past ten years most of the well-named publications, media house's and online journal editors have either resigned or been forced to step down from the post.

We found that almost all the press and media houses are influenced or are biased towards certain political ideologies. Several editors are pulled over for putting their opinion in the public domain. Journalists are asked to trawl their opinions from articles and anchors are asked to be biased during debates.

The digital media is not at all hungry for facts and news. It has evolved into a revenue-generating business via sponsors and advertisement.

The question remains will the true freedom of press ever be restored ?
